About Aldo

Why Choose Aldo Leopold?

  • Aldo Leopold Community School is a 4K-8th grade choice school located in the heart of the historic Astor Park neighborhood in downtown Green Bay.
  • We are known for our whole child, experiential learning approach. At Aldo we believe that education must prepare all learners to be critical thinkers and thoughtful citizens. Students work toward compassion, respect, equality and justice, and are allowed to discover and explore their place in the world.
  • Our staff provides instruction and guidance that focuses on the student's needs and interests. All students, including those with special and gifted needs, are included in daily classroom instruction.
  • We believe in raising children in the company of adults, and students and staff regularly assume the roles of both teacher and learner.
  • Students often design and implement service learning projects that become a path for them to further their connections with our community.
  • We offer more than 40 options for enrichment programs, including music, sports clubs, yearbook, intramural sports, Destination Imagination and more.

At Aldo Leopold, I feel my children's strengths and needs are not only acknowledged, but encouraged. My children are receiving personalized support from not just one teacher, but an entire team of professionals who see and honor them for the individuals they are. As a parent, I feel supported and valued by a like-minded community of parents, staff, and teachers that make up this learning environment.

Conditions of Learning in Action

Do You Ever Wonder What Your Teachers Do During the Early Releases?

Well, at Aldo, we strive to ensure that Brian Cambourne’s theory/practice/ideas of the “Eight Universal Conditions of Learning” are part of what we do, who we are, and how we walk along side children in their educational journeys’.

So What Are Universal Conditions of Learning?

Brian Cambourne, is an Associate Professor and head of the Language, Learning and Literacy Unit at the University of Wollongong. Cambourne concluded there are eight universal conditions for learning and these are used as a guide to create supportive learning environments in school.  These conditions include: demonstration, responsibility, approximation, response, immersion, expectation, engagement, and use/employment. Currently, he places the condition of engagement at the core of learning.

Getting Back to the Early Releases….

Simply stated - we practice our craft.  We work with experts outside of the building to improve our skills.  We work with the experts inside of our buildings to improve our skills, and we prepare to make every moment spent with your children as meaningful and primed for learning as possible.

During our last early release, the 3/4 unit led professional learning and allowed us to experience the “Eight Universal Conditions of Learning” by introducing us to an exciting new teaching tool. We were apart of the intentional and purposeful learning from a student’s perspective.
